Nicola is a major character in the Enemy series, first appearing in The Fear. She was the leader of the kids at Westminster Palace, and was the elected New World Prime Minister. Many of the boys who encountered her had a crush on her.
Before the Battle of Hyde Park, Nicola went to David King's camp to try and get him to fight against The Fear with the other kids. They got into an argument and Nicola insulted David. David then shot her in the back as she was walking away.
Appearance
Nicola was a pretty girl with thick red hair and green eyes. She dressed herself like a member of Parliament, often in a dress and tights. Unlike many of the children, she was clean and smelled like soap and perfume.[1] She had a posh voice.[2]
Personality
Nicola is the leader of Westminster and thus the elected Prime Minister. She was a very likable and charismatic girl, as the House of Lords believed deeply in her, and both Ryan Aherne and David King had a crush on her. As the leader of the kids, she saw herself as the new Prime Minister,[3] and as such behaved very rationally and did her best to keep a clear head. Though she was open to helping them, she was still very suspicious of the Tower kids, believing that DogNut could have been a spy and that Jordan might want to take over the centre of London.
Nicola appeared to have been aware of the crushes that other kids had on her, and was not above using their feelings to her advantage. The most prominent example of this was David King, whom Nicola manipulated with some small flirtation. While talking with Ed Carter, she said that she "never liked pretty boys" and didn't like things to be "too perfect".[1] She also tried to use slang, but due to her personality, it sounded like she was trying too hard.
History
Throughout her childhood, Nicola had never been attracted to handsome boys and instead went for the more interesting ones that her mother didn't like.[4]
Some time after the disaster began, Nicola made it to the Houses of Parliament and became part of the group there, She established a democratic style of governing themselves, and the other kids voted her the Prime Minister.
Synopsis
The Fear (2011)
When DogNut's crew sink their boat along the bank of the Thames, Nicola and her group come to help them. She is hesitant to return DogNut's high-five[2] and is suspicious of the new kids, as she is currently defending the Westminster group from raids by the St. James' Park group lead by Just John.[5] She tells DogNut's crew about the other groups at the centre of London but expects them to leave quickly. She is at first shown to distrust David and the Buckingham Palace group but later sends a letter via the Hunters requesting a meeting with David. The only group of kids she seems to completely trust are The Hunters. They work to clear the streets of oppoes and in return are given supplies and food. During the meeting she enters into an alliance with David's group. David clearly has a crush on Nicola and she uses this to her advantage, manipulating him slightly through flirtation.
The Sacrifice (2012)
Nicola allows Ed's group to rest while they search for DogNut. She sits very close to Ed and seems to fancy him.[1] As she is going to bed, she thinks about Ed again and about how eventually the kids will have to grow up and have children.[4]
The End (2015)
Nicola hosts the meeting between the leaders of the groups. She sides with Justin, Blue, Maxie, Shadowman, Ryan and Jordan but is hesitant at first. Not many of her kids are fighters and she also wishes to convince David to join the army. When David refuses, she still attempts to have him fight with the kids. She asks Ryan to escort her to the Dorchester hotel and then walks alone to David's camp in the night. The two get into an argument, causing Nicola to lash out at David with insults. As Nicola is walking away she is shot in the back by David. She falls over, blood flows from her mouth and tears pour out of her eyes before she slips away. Her death inspires the Westminster kids to fight in the battle.
Relationships
David King
David had a very obvious crush on Nicola and Nicola used this to her advantage, manipulating him slightly through flirtation. Nicola didn't fully trust David and couldn't bring herself to see him as a real romantic partner. At the same time, she also underestimated David, seeing him as a posh, prideful boy who could easily be manipulated, and didn't see him as a true danger until her death.
In The End, Nicola traveled to Hyde Park to reason with David and to convince him to stop fighting the other children. The two got into an argument, causing Nicola to lash out at David with insults. As Nicola is walking away, David shoots her in the back and kills her.
Ed Carter
Nicola appeared to have a crush on Ed, as she was very open with him and sat closely to him during The Sacrifice. During their first talk, she sat very close to him and acted very interested in his scar, insisting that it brought him character and she hoped he killed the sicko who gave it to him.[1] Later on in the novel, she thought about Ed before she went to bed and thought about how eventually, the kids would have to grow up and have kids.
Ryan Aherne
Nicola trusted Ryan but doesn't see him as more than a partner. Ryan had a good opinion of her.
DogNut
While Nicola was open to helping DogNut's crew, she didn't fully trust him and believed he could be a spy. DogNut had a crush on her as well, as he had a thing for posh girls.[2]
