Malik Hussein is a major character in the Enemy series, first appearing in The Dead. A young Muslim boy who attended school with Ed Carter, Malik was thought to have been killed during an ambush at the FEZ. However, he is revealed to have survived the attack, albeit with severe scarring, and he journeyed around London until he found Ella and her group at the Monkey Island Hotel. He took Ella in after the attack, and they became friends. After they were found by Ed and his group, Malik journeyed to the heart of London to fight in the battle against The Fear.
Appearance
In The Dead, Malik is a fourteen year-old boy. He has brown eyes.[3]
As of The Hunted, Malik is fifteen years old.[4] He now has a multitude of scars sustained from fights over the past year, including a missing ear, a few missing fingers, a ripped-up nose, a blinded eye, and mutilated skin.
Personality
Malik wasn't very religious, and got annoyed when Ed lumped all practising Muslims in with the same beliefs.[5] Malik stays kind and protective of Ella, even when she calls him names. He does not hurt other kids, even when they are rude to him.
History
Malik lived in Slough, and had three sisters named Ameena, Nadia, and Zahra.[6] His family were practising Muslims, although Malik himself was noted as not being very religious.[7] Malik attended Rowhurst School, an all-boys boarding school in Kent, England. In The Dead, it is mentioned Malik had a girlfriend that his parents didn't know about but she dumped him for an older boy who had his own car.[5]
Ten days before the first chapter of The Dead, Malik hid with Matt Palmer, Archie Bishop, and twelve other students in the school chapel. All the boys had to read were prayer books, and one night, Archie suggested that they all say a prayer. Though he wasn't very religious, Malik prayed to his god as the other students prayed to what they wanted. Matt started to get into the prayer, and he began reading from various sections of a Bible to keep up everyone's spirits. The church was very cold at night, and the students tried to start a fire by burning pages from prayer books and old Bibles -- but at Matt's insistence, they began to use charcoal instead. By the time the students realized they were unintentionally being poisoned, they were too late and began to die or fall unconscious from the fumes.[8]
