-- Saint George's internal monologue at the end of The Enemy (2009)[1] |
Greg Thorne, later known as Saint George, is the main antagonist of the Enemy series. Formerly a renowned butcher, Greg became an incredibly-intelligent sicko blessed with the ability to lead armies of grown-ups with the intention to devour all the children in London.
Appearance
Saint George is described to be a fat, but well-muscled, boil covered, bald man who wears a pair of wire-framed glasses with no lenses perched on his squashed rotting nose. Random tufts of hair sprouted from his otherwise bald scalp on his immense, great cannon-ball of a head that lolled around over his chest and that his head was too big for his neck.
Before he was fully infected, Greg had fair hair.[2]
His nickname comes from the fact that he wears a grubby white vest with the red cross of Saint George on it.
Personality
Before he was infected, Greg had a loud personality that embarrassed his son Liam. He was typically very jovial and cracked jokes that sometimes fell flat, but he kept a positive attitude even in the initial face of the apocalypse. His temper occasionally manifested in "rages", where he would become extremely angry for apparently no reason, and as violent road rage. Greg's anger scared his son enough that he wouldn't tell him that he was being bullied out of fear that Greg would beat up the bully.[3]
Greg was very condescending towards the kids on the coach, and presumably towards others, for going to school
Despite his anger issues, Greg was a loving father to Liam. He would take Liam to football games and watch movies with him, and the two went on trips to the farm of one of Greg's employees together.[3] He would also make sure Liam stayed healthy, encouraging him to eat healthy (even in the apocalypse) and making sure to get him proper glasses.[4] After his ex-wife refused to have any real contact with Liam, Greg supposedly agreed to allow Liam to spend holidays with her so Liam would be able to have a relationship with his mother.[3]
History
When Greg was a child, his father would take him to football games at the Emirates stadium.[5] He dropped out of school when he was sixteen, and honed his butcher skills rather than completing his education.[6] As an adult, Greg became a butcher and opened an organic butcher shop called Greg's Organic Gaff.[7] He went on a few television shows and won many awards for his sausages, even winning Butcher of the Year two years in a row.
Greg eventually married an unnamed woman and they had a son named Liam. They would all go on long car trips, and Liam would often find himself staring at the back of Greg's large head. At some point in the past, Greg's wife walked out on the family and moved to Coventry with a man named Daryl. Because his ex-wife showed little interest in raising Liam, Greg took to raising him on his own. They would do fun things like go to football games and watch old war movies, which Greg had a fondness for. They also owned a boxer named Charlie, which they walked on Hampstead Heath, and would visit the farm of "Big" Paul MacLaren.[8]
When the disaster initially occurred, Greg and Liam went down to Paul's farm near Maidstone, as Paul offered to let them stay in the countryside until everything blew over. They were able to fortify the barn and use Paul's animals and equipment to make their own food. Eventually, Paul, his wife, and his older sons became infected, and Greg was forced to kill them. Paul's youngest, Little Paul, became hysterical, and eventually became catatonic. Greg took Little Paul into the barn and killed him to stop his suffering and would later tell others that the boy "didn't make it".[7] Whether it was a genuine attempt to get more food or if his actions were influenced by the onset of the disease,
Some time later, Greg took Liam and left the barn with the intention of going to the Emirates stadium. They eventually happened on a coach bus being attacked by sickos, and Greg killed them all to save the people on it. After the fight, Greg found only three people were left on the bus -- a trio of students named Brooke, Aleisha and Courtney. and began to drive the bus to London.[9] He later found two more kids, a pair of siblings named Froggie and Zohra, and picked them up as well.
